Keeping my wisdom teeth

At the suggestion of my dentist, I went to an oral surgeon to ask about having my wisdom teeth out. All four are impacted, and two are completely un-erupted. Basically, the surgeon said that the risk of having them out at my age is greater than the risk of leaving them in. Having the top teeth out could put holes in my sinuses, and having the bottom teeth out could result in permanent facial nerve damage (basically, I wouldn't be able to feel the lower half of my face). Apparently, I should have had them out 12 years ago when it was safe, but heck, no one told me.

oof good luck with that one man. Hopefully they just hang out and dont do anything. In my family, which notoriously has tooth problems, I got the crap eyesight, but am blessed by not a cavity ever, and my wisdom teeth are not even there. I hate dentists messing with my chompers, so I feel good about that

Yeah, if the tooth breaks apart, it puts you at a higher risk of getting an infection. And if the shards migrate, they can end up in your sinuses.

I'm getting all 4 out in a month. Two impacted and one directly over a nerve, this is going to be fun.

Battery Tender Unnecessary is a dentist, he can help. Apparently all of my wisdom teeth are growing in correctly, so I might not need them taken out.

i picked the shards out. happened while blasting down a rough road on a 400ex. knew it was bad, but now everytime i drink something too cold it lights my world up.

Out of curiosity, how old are you now?

A hole into your sinus isn't a huge deal most of the time, small ones will just heal up like normal. Damage to your inferior alveolar nerve (which runs in your lower jaw, usually below tooth roots) is a real risk for all patients, but yours might just be closer than some other people's.

I ran across the problem when I was younger where they were going to file it under two types of insurance based on if they had to cut the gums to see the teeth (medical) or if they had breached (dental).

Well I had great medical coverage but not so good dental and it was going to be alright when it was just one tooth that came through and the other three were still hidden away.

But then the waiting game started to get an appointment I could get to. And then two more teeth emerged but impacted.

I'll be 30 in a couple weeks. Both of my lower wisdom teeth (one in particular) intrude upon that nerve.

I have a little pocket right here, and it collects food when I eat and it pisses me off. Top wisdoms are fine though.

I got my bottom 2 removed when I was near 30. I have slight nerve damage on half of my lip because of it. If its not bothering you just leave them alone.

Holes? Seems like those could be sewn up?

Sorry to hear that man. Hopefully they find a good solution. Years ago, when I still had dental insurance, I had XRays done and was told I had no wisdom teeth. That's the good news. The same XRay showed 2 (unearthed) fused teeth. Yeah, they had to saw those ones in half and remove them because there was supposed to be a tooth in between them. Good luck sir.

Im 19, had all 4 took out last summer. It sucked and one actually got infected(adding to the suck factor). Was still better my own person do it than some Army doctor rip them out. I would advise not having it done if possible.

I had mine out, all one shot, about 18 years ago. Wasn't much fun, but no problems now.
What's the risk of leaving them in? I mean, are they causing you any trouble? At your age they should be pretty much done moving around, no?

I has impacted wisdoms teeth removed at the age of 24 by USF dentistry students for $100 back in 1984. They were brutal but got the job done. I only had them in my jaw. I've heard the ones in your head a quite a bit worse.

I just had mine pulled. I am mid-30s, and they were significantly decayed, as well as causing decay to the molars in front of them.

Right side first... bad. Dry socket for a week afterward.

Left side a month and a half later, WORSE (>1 hour pulling the fragmented lower left itself), another dry socket, for another week, and a remnant spur that finally collapsed.

air-exposed bone aches in an amazing way.

Still have to have the cavities filled where they impacted the molars in front of them... but it has only been a few weeks, and I am not sure I want more torture.

The second run holes haven't completely closed just yet, but they don't hurt anymore, and I can eat crispy and carbonated foods again.

It is nasty to try to find food that is not sharp or crispy, or nuts that can get lodged in the sockets, but also isn't sugary... as I am also susceptible to high blood sugar.

Three of mine are gone, one's left and it's never bothered me. The last one to come out (25 years ago!) was a b*tch...my dentist couldn't get it out after he started on it. He made some phone calls, gave me a big blast of novocaine and had my then-girlfriend (now spousal unit) drive me across town to a proper oral surgeon. Full general anesthesia was used...
